A Thousand Splendid Suns

Sigh! I just finished reading this book, even though I had promised myself I wouldn't, not after The Kite Runner made me feel so melancholy.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a terrific novel--a little contrived in parts--but the overall book is fabulous. I cried. I cry easily; so that isn't a great feat, but still it was very touching.

I know some of you have mentioned reading this book. How do you feel it compares to The Kite Runner? I felt this book was somehow better; maybe because it was about women.

In any case, a great book and a great read. Can't recommend highly enough!

Work it! Read it!

Well, I have never worked out in my life. And I didn't know that until this week.

I finally signed up for one of those classes at the gym. I woke up at 6 a.m. and got to my early Step/BodyToning class, full of anticipation. It was a killer. Sweat was pouring out of me and I rarely sweat. And I'm still sore. It hurts to even laugh.

I am going for two step classes a week + one yoga class. This was the first week. I don't know if I can keep the pace up, but I'm going to try. I know people say that you can addicted to working out, I am not too sure about that, but I certainly love the feeling of righteousness I get after I work out. I feel so good; I could light a cigarette and eat a Big Mac while slurping down a huge Cola.

In other news; I had my first book club meeting. Our book club is called The Non Danes, because...you guessed it, we're all not Danish. There are eight of us; even one man from Ireland (also a writer, working towards getting a book published).

Our first book was Le Divorce by Diane Johnson and it was fabulous. I love the book and the movie (it's by Merchant Ivory and all their movies are so great). The meeting went very well. We met at a French restaurant, Le St. Jacques, where we had a very French meal. Then we went to my place (most of us did) and we drank Italian wine (the French wine bottle was hard to open and we were all women) and ate strawberries with chocolate while we watched the movie.
We have even picked a book for the next meeting in October. It's very exciting to do this. I usually talk to book clubs that read my book; but this is my first book club experience. I hope we'll read one of my books too.

Are you in a book club? How do you like the experience? What do you do when someone picks a real stinker and you have to read it?

Danish rights!

I am ecstatic. The Danish rights for my upcoming novel The Sound of Language have just been sold to Art People/People Group. I am so happy.

This means a lot to me because I live here and half my family is Danish. Now everyone in my family will be able to read my books and that is such a gift for me.

I hope the book does well in Denmark as it is set in Denmark. Fingers crossed!
